HANA: And you requested this deposition be transcribed?
REYES: I requested that my consent be transcribed correctly. That's different.
HANA: Understood. Please begin with your stated limits as filed.
REYES: I want it on record that I said yes to Mara. I did not say yes to the transcript. The transcript began touching me on page six.
HANA: Let's establish the sequence. You entered Suite 9-Velvet with Mara Kline, Member 9-V-089, age 32. Both adults, both consenting.
REYES: Yes. We'd been partners for a year. We filed a joint scene plan. It was very careful. Mara is... careful. The Registry requires a declared boundary. One desire you will not act upon, to stabilize the room. Mine was on file from intake.
HANA: Read it for the record.
REYES: "I will not consent to being recognized by description. Do not write down what my body does without asking me first. You can touch me, but you cannot take notes on me while you do it." It sounds stupid now.[reading]
HANA: Why did you choose that boundary?
REYES: Because that's the thing that actually scares me. Not pain, not exposure. Being accurately understood by the wrong person. Being read correctly by someone who shouldn't have the key. That's what the Suite feeds on, I think. Not sex. That specific shame.
HANA: Suite 9-Velvet remains stable so long as every entrant declares one desire they will not act upon. Your declaration was logged.
REYES: Yes. We went in. The room is... the Registry calls it a restricted catalogue space. It looks like a hotel room but the walls are all papered with old consent forms. Thousands of them. You can feel them watching.
Mara and I had a good scene. Consensual, negotiated, adult. We used our safeword system. We checked in. Aftercare on the bed. It was ours.
Then the night clerk slid the transcript under the door for signature. Standard procedure. "Suite Record - For Authentication."
HANA: And you read it?
REYES: I read the whole thing before I signed. That's my compulsion. That's how they get you. Page one to five was accurate. Times, positions, language we used. Embarrassingly accurate. Like someone who knew us had written it.
Page six was not our scene.
HANA: Describe page six.
REYES: Page six described what my body did when Mara said a specific phrase. A phrase she has never said. A phrase I have never told anyone, not even Mara, that I respond to. It's from a private fantasy I have had since I was twenty-one. No one knows it.
The transcript described it word for word. Including my response. Including the fact that I would feel guilty afterward for responding to something I hadn't consented to out loud, even though my body had.
It knew. The room remembered a desire I had never declared.
HANA: What did you do?
REYES: I refused to sign. I wrote in the margin: "This did not happen. This is not my consent. My limit stands - do not document my body without permission." I initialed it L.R.
Mara witnessed it. She was shaken. She said she didn't say that phrase. She didn't. I know she didn't.
We left the transcript on the bed and left the Suite.
HANA: And then?
REYES: And then we went to the front desk to report a breach. The Archivist pulled our file. She pulled the original file. Not the night's transcript. The intake file. From 2021.
HANA: What did it show?
REYES: My intake questionnaire. Question 41: "List one fantasy you have never acted upon and do not wish to be acted upon without explicit re-negotiation."
I answered it in 2021. I had forgotten I answered it.
It was the phrase from page six. Verbatim.
Below it, in red ink, in my handwriting, my boundary from today: "I will not consent to being recognized by description. Do not write down what my body does without asking me first."
And below that, in different ink, in handwriting I don't recognize but is dated 2021, a note: "Subject will attempt to enforce this boundary on 08/22 by refusing to sign transcript. Refusal to be filed as re-authentication. See Suite Record page six."
HANA: You are saying your refusal was already documented.
REYES: My refusal was the authentication. The Suite doesn't need you to say yes. It needs you to have a limit precise enough to be identifiable. My limit was how it learned my shape. My attempt to withdraw was how it proved I was a separately accountable participant who could withdraw.
The transcript didn't violate my consent with Mara. Mara and I were fine. It separated my consent from me and filed it somewhere else. My body remembers agreeing to something my conscious mind didn't.
HANA: One final question. The deposition form in front of you - you initialed your limit again at the bottom of this page. Why?
REYES: I didn't. I haven't -
[pause, paper movement]
REYES: That's not my pen.
HANA: For the record, the subject is looking at Addendum 9-V-214-B, pre-filed.
